PETG for functional parts, holders and housings

PETG can be a starting point for a useful everyday part. The whole design and the way it will be used still need to be considered.

The short answer

PETG is worth discussing for functional plastic parts such as holders and housings. It does not make every geometry suitable for every load. A PETG order starts from €10.40, including preparation.

Describe the job the part needs to do

PETG can be a starting point when a print must perform an everyday function rather than just represent a shape. Examples include a small device housing, an accessory holder or a mounting made to a particular size. Its purpose helps identify the properties that matter.

You do not need detailed knowledge of every plastic before making a request. Explain what is supported, how the part is installed and whether it will become hot. A photograph, drawing and measurements in the project form are more useful than simply asking for a strong plastic.

Strength comes from the complete part

Choosing PETG does not remove the need for suitable geometry and print orientation. A thin projection, sharp transition or awkward fixing point can remain a weak area. For a loaded part, the walls, layer direction and connection to other objects also need attention.

A holder used gently and the same holder that is repeatedly pulled may look like the same job, but their working conditions differ. The guide to printed part strength helps explain the load and choose what to test on the first sample.

Moisture resistance is different from watertightness

PETG is often considered for parts used in damp conditions. That does not mean every printed vessel or housing will be watertight. Geometry and manufacturing parameters affect the behavior of walls and joints, which must be considered for the actual design.

If the part contacts detergent, oil or another liquid, identify the substance. A general material description does not cover every chemical environment. Food contact also needs a separate assessment of the particular material and process; the name PETG alone does not establish suitability.

Choose color and check all the important dimensions

PETG is available on the site in black, white and gray. The order minimum is €10.40, including preparation. Upload the model to the cost calculator and select the material. A suitable model receives an estimate before you send the request.

If it joins another assembly, check width, length and height as well as critical fits. Matching outside dimensions does not guarantee that a hole or snap connection will work. The accuracy and fit guide explains how to describe clearances and dimensions.

Check a new holder before ordering the batch

Order a single example of a new design, install it and carry out the required action. Check assembly force, access to screws, the movement of adjacent parts and everyday handling. If it needs a change, describe the required dimensions and function as well as sending photographs.

After a successful trial, discuss a series using the same parameters and the available quantity discounts. If the next application involves constant sunlight or another new exposure, revisit the material choice. A repeat order may have different requirements from the first one.

Common questions

Is PETG always stronger than PLA?

Materials behave differently, and the result depends on the geometry and load. “Stronger” is not a useful comparison without defining the conditions.

Can you print a watertight PETG housing?

Watertightness must be specified as a separate requirement for the design, joints and testing. A material’s moisture resistance does not guarantee that every FDM part will be sealed.
