Choosing between FDM, SLA and SLS printing

3D printing describes several manufacturing processes. The useful choice depends on your part’s geometry, surface and purpose. Here is how to frame the requirements before requesting a quote.

Choose a printing process around the part’s requirements, surface and working conditions. DECORDS 3D in Tallinn offers FDM printing in PLA, PETG, ASA and TPU for individual objects, prototypes and small batches. SLA and SLS are different processes that can be useful to understand when comparing manufacturing options. Send your model and describe the result you need before ordering so we can assess its suitability for our FDM service.

The same digital shape might be a display model, a checking sample or a component in a working product. Appearance may lead the first task, dimensions the second, and operating conditions the third. Explain what you want to learn or obtain, because a good image of the model cannot communicate every requirement. Show important fits or small lettering separately and include the actual dimensions of those features.

FDM builds an object by depositing heated plastic in successive layers. Those layers usually leave visible surface lines that belong in the appearance discussion. DECORDS 3D uses this process to make agreed models in the available materials. Mark an important face on an image so its expected appearance can be discussed before production begins.

SLA uses light to cure a liquid photopolymer resin. It is a process to consider when small features and surface characteristics are particularly important. The finished properties depend on the resin and the treatment after printing. If that type of result is essential to your project, confirm the process with the supplier before placing an order.

SLS produces a part by sintering powdered material with a laser. Powder surrounding the model supports it while it is being made. That feature is relevant when choosing a process for complex geometry. The result still depends on the particular material, dimensions and surface treatment, so the process name cannot stand in for a complete specification.

An inquiry to DECORDS 3D is assessed for FDM manufacture, rather than presented as an SLA or SLS offer. This establishes clear expectations for material, shape and surface while the request is being discussed. Resolve any need for a different process before payment and approval of the model. Matching the service to the actual task is more useful than choosing only from a process name or a general impression.

Our online calculator takes STL or OBJ and estimates FDM printing from outer dimensions, material, size tier and quantity. Compare other proposals at the same physical size and establish what each price includes. Hollow spaces are not deducted from the bounding volume, and this estimate does not use a slicer to calculate printer time. Check the units after uploading so the price relates to the object you intend to make.

For an object that joins another item, provide the critical measurements and intended checking method. If fit or appearance matters, an agreed sample can help identify changes before a small batch. Explain whether the order is for the printed model alone or includes other work on the object. A clear scope and acceptance process give both sides the same reference when the print is being used to develop a new design.

The Formlabs comparison guide gives a general overview of these processes. For a DECORDS 3D FDM assessment, send the file, quantity, dimensions and description through the website. If a model needs creating, use the modeling request form and attach photographs or a sketch. Manufacturing takes place in Tallinn, where an approved finished order can be collected or sent by an available delivery method.
